"The One I Gave My Heart To" is a contemporary R&B/pop/neo soul song by American singer Aaliyah. The song is the sixth and final single from Aaliyah's second album One in a Million. The song was written by Diane Warren and the album version was produced by Daryl Simmons, while the single version was produced by Guy Roche. The song is a ballad where Aaliyah asks how could the man she gave her heart to be the person who hurt her feelings so harshly.

"The One I Gave My Heart To" debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in the issue week of October 4, 1997 at number 24 and went on to peak at number 9[1]. In the same issue week, the song debuted on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at number 18 and went on to peak at number 8[2]. It became Aaliyah's third single to enter the top ten of Hot 100 following Back & Forth and At Your Best (You Are Love). The reason for the songs high peak on the R&B chart despite the Radio/Single version's mainstream pop sound is because of sales & Rhythmic Airplay, because it only made it to No. 20 on the R&B Airplay chart, surprisingly enough "The One I Gave My Heart To" didn't make The Top 40 Mainstream or Top 40 Tracks charts. The song was certified gold single by RIAA in October 21, 1997[3]. Outside the U.S., "The One I Gave My Heart To" went to number one in 20 different countries becoming Aaliyah's most successful song worldwide and it reached number 2 on the United World Chart for 16 weeks becoming the third best selling single of 1998 only behind Celine Dion's huge hit My Heart Will Go On. It also reached top ten in over forty different countires.

[edit] B-side

"The One I Gave My Heart To" was first released as a double A-side single with "Hot like Fire" (1997). The B-side for that release was "Death of a Playa". This song features Aaliyah's brother, Rashad and was written by the two siblings. It was produced by Timbaland. Earlier that year, "Death of a Playa" was used as the B-side for "4 Page Letter".

[edit] Music video

The music video for "The One I Gave My Heart To" was directed by Darren Grant. Throughout the video there are two main settings and another one at the end. In one setting Aaliyah is inside a house with wooden floors and walls. In the house, there is a room with nothing but a mirror on the floor. With this mirror Aaliyah is able to see other scenes of the video. The second setting is where Aaliyah is sitting on wooden bench in a forest setting. In the final scene Aaliyah walks outside while rain pours down.
