The Old Rectory School is a school in Brettenham, Suffolk, founded in 1981, broke with tradition by providing an environment so that children with dyslexia could be taken out of mainstream schools, where their academic learning was being hampered, and given short-term intensive specialist teaching in areas of literacy and numeracy. Once these children acquired sufficient skills they could return to mainstream education able to cope with the basic literacy and numerical skills for basic learning. The programme, which was pioneered by the educationist Martin Phillips, and his former Danish wife Susanne Hambro - a qualified dyslexia therapist, was unique in the UK and Europe. The school still claims to provide a secure and comfortable learning environment for children from ages 7 to 14.[1]
