It is home to a variety of alternative fashion shops including Beadesaurus, Fallout, Anna Bee, Airy Fairy, Orphan Annie amongst others and is often regarded as the home of true independent retail in Birmingham. It also includes a hair salon, tattoo shop and two piercing parlours.

It is divided into 5 'Levels' which are linked by a maze of stairways and corridors, the walls of which are covered in posters and flyers for local bands, shows and events. Each level comprises a number of shops, selling a variety of alternative clothing items.
It was first established in 1972 and has continued running to the present day however it is due to be moved to a new location sometime over the next few years to make way for Martineau Galleries. It has not yet been announced where it will be relocated to.
