The story mainly follows John Guyton, a financial manager wrongly accused by the press. His life now in ruins, he finds himself joining a cult dedicated to total warfare against the media. Before long, he becomes The Hand, the centre figure of the group who answers only to the mysterious and unseen figure The Voice.
