[edit] History
The Newman School was founded as Newman Preparatory School in 1945, the centennial of Cardinal John Henry Newman's conversion to Catholicism, by Dr. J. Harry Lynch and a group of Catholic laymen, for the purpose of providing college preparation to veterans returning from service to their country in World War II. Over the years, "Newman Prep" evolved into a co-educational, diploma-granting program, and eventually began to accept younger students into the ninth grade. During the 1960s, the school operated The Newman School for Boys as a separate four-year (grades nine through twelve) and then six-year (grades seven through twelve) college preparatory school. Walter J. Egan was head of the School for Boys during most of its existence.
Now known as The Newman School and headed by J. Harry Lynch Jr., son of the founder,Newman provides a liberal education to a diverse group of approximately two hundred American and international students. Newman's American student body is comprised of students from all around greater Boston; fifty percent of these students come from the city of Boston itself, representing every major neighborhood. International students come from over twenty countries around the world, including China, Brazil, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, among other countries. Academics, sports, activities, and volunteer service are all opportunities given at The Newman School.
[edit] Athletics
Newman competes in Division B of the Massachuesettes Bay Independent Leaugue.
[edit] Boys Soccer
Newmans strongest sport is far and away Soccer. This past Season Newman went unbeaten in conference play during the regular season. However in a triple overtime, penalty kicks, 1-0 nail biter Newman lost to hated rival Commonwealth Academy.
[edit] Boys Baseball
Baseball is also a fairly strong aspect of Newman sports. Last season the Cardinals finnished a win on the last day of the season away from being division champs in the final season without a playoff system for MBIL baseball.
This Season Newman has started slow with a 1-2 record and a record of 0-2 in league play. However they did show signs of comin out of it in their recent win over CCA.
They are also expected to be strong for the next few years as well with likely their two strongest players, Mike McHale and Connor Trask, only juniors and Shortstop/Second Baseman Sean Michelli just a sophmore.
[edit] Boys Basketball
Newmans Boys Basketball team had one of their toughest seasons in recent memory in the 07-08 season. Captain Jorry Michael was injured in the second game of the season against Boston University Academy and Korean Power Forward Jae Noh suffered an early season ankle injury that aside from half a game ended his season. At times the intelligince and heart of the team was in true question. However sophmore guards Sean Michelli and Jamaine had very respectable years, Jamaine also played some time at forward were he excelled. Junior Center John Chiodini had a very strong season highlighted by seven blocks in the final game and win of the season over BUA. Little is know about the Freshman class, mainly because of Coach Jeff Iwanicki living up to his reputation of givin out very little playing time to all freshman who show signs of annoyance with the coach and won't make themselves up to be gods. They finnished the season at 2-14. As one of the Cardinals said at the end of the season "Hey we had a better season than the dolphins."
