The New Black is the fifth and last album by Canadian heavy metal band Strapping Young Lad. It was released on July 11, 2006, debuting at #200 on the Billboard charts.[1] Promo copies of the album began surfacing since June, 2006, and were subsequently leaked onto the Internet.

For the first time, a studio version of "Far Beyond Metal" is made available here. The song was previously only made available as a live recording on the 1998 live album No Sleep Till Bedtime.

Guitarist Jed Simon said the following about the album on the band's MySpace page:

We have moved over to Profile Studios here in Vancouver (for the recording of the new album), and Byron (Stroud, bass) and Jed are both busy tracking their bass and guitar parts. It's going great. Wait 'till you hear how crushing it sounds, whoa! Dev (Devin Townsend, guitar / vocals) and Will (Campagna, keyboards) should be getting busy in the next week, Dev is running the board for Byron while Shaun (Thingvold...longtime SYL engineer) is running Jed's world. The drums are just insane...but what else would you expect from THE MAN!!!!??? Everything is on track, and on schedule...the guys are focused...all is well.[2]

The first single from the album is "Wrong Side," and a music video of the song was shot on May 28, 2006. The video was officially released on the band's MySpace around the same time as the album.

The album comes packaged with a second CD featuring a sampling of various other Century Media artists. The European version contains two bonus tracks: "The Long Pig" and a cover of The Melvins' "Zodiac".[3] The Japanese version contains "The Long Pig" and the instrumental "C:enter:###" (pronounced: see colon, enter colon, pound pound pound).
