[edit] Plot summary

Elizabeth Allen is a spoilt girl who is the only child of her parents. She becomes very upset and outraged when she learns that she is being sent to a boarding school. When Elizabeth joins Whyteleafe School she is determined to misbehave so that she would be expelled and she could go back home at the end of the first term.

At Whyteleafe Elizabeth discovers a truly new world. Due to her tantrums and michiefs she is disliked by her fellow students, but slowly, Elizabeth learns how to share and get along with people. She makes a new friend, Joan Townshed. She also likes Rita and Williams - The Head Girl and The Head Boy of the School. She also gets along well with her piano lessons and secretly longs to play at the function held at the end of the second term. Her friendship with Joan thickens and she discovers that Joan is disliked by her mother ever since the death of her younger brother. Her mother hardly wrote to her or sent her gifts. For Joan's happiness, Elizabeth writes a letter as well as sends a gift to Joan in the name of her mother on her birthday. Joan is overjoyed to receive gifts from her mother (actually sent by Elizabeth). Eventually, Joan discovers the truth and becomes very sad. She wanders off in the rain in distress only to catch a bad fever. Elizabeth feels guilty and writes a letter to Joan's mother explaining everything and also Joan's sickness.

Mrs Townshed arrives at Whyteleafe to meet Joan as she realised how cruel she had been to Joan after reading Elizabeth's letter. She apologises to Joan for her mistake. As a result Joan develops a new relationship with her mother. She thanks Elizabeth for this. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, with the help of Rita and Williams makes up her mind to stay back at Whyteleafe as she had started liking Whyteleafe and does not want to leave behind her friends.
