The Myth (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Continuously playing since its inception in 1990 makes The Myth one of the longest standing rock bands in Malta. Formed by Dion Farrell on guitars and vocals and Mark Galea on drums, the band now also features Karen Farrell on guitars and backing vocals and Patrick Mifsud on bass.

Throughout this time, the band was featured on all local media, including radio and TV stations. In 1996 the band was chosen as a supporting band for the UK's official Eagles Tribute band. The band also supported Status Quo in 1998 and Smokie in 1999.

The Myth plays a mixture of rock 'n roll, blues, acoustic and hard rock music in various venues around Malta.

[edit] History

[edit] Formation and early days (1990 - 1996)

After a year jamming together, Dion Farrell and Mark Galea formed The Myth in September 1990. Their first live appearance was two months later during which they performed just two songs, both of which were cover versions.

Their early style is difficult to categorise but it was described by some as 'bridging American melodic rock with the more classic European influences' (The Times, November 1996). Such tracks include Master Of Death, The Anthem and the self titled The Myth. These songs were based on long guitar solos, sometimes even three minutes long, powerful drumming and melodic bass lines.

[edit] The Second Generation (1996 - 2005)

Always interested in trying something different, The Myth experimented with a completely different sound. Panpipes and tambourines replaced the long guitar solos while the songs became quieter and more acoustic in nature. Wise Men and The Truth are just two of such songs. However, the band did not completely ditch the old sound. In fact, they could now play different styles at different events and hence reach wider audiences. During this period, the band had the opportunity to support live in concert Status Quo, Smokie and The Eagles Tribute Band.

[edit] The Third Generation (2005 - present)

While retaining their two different musical styles, the Myth now decided to venture into the more commercial scene. Hence while adding a list of popular cover versions to their song list they also wrote radio-friendly tracks such as Star and Animal. Although written in 1996, Sworn Independent was finally recorded in 2007 and it was the band's first recording in seventeen years.
