[edit] Plot summary

As in the other books in the series, the reader is portrayed as the protagonist of the story, referred to in the present tense and by the second-person pronoun "you."

Here, the reader is visiting his cousins Michael and Jane in Connecticut, when he learns the story of an abandoned, decrepit house that is said to be cursed and inhabited by the cat of the deceased owner. The reader, along with Michael and Jane, debate whether to break inside and explore the mansion.

Through different choices, the reader meets the various residents of the house, including a witch, a groundskeeper, an emotionally fragile maid and the cat.

"The Mystery of Chimney Rock" has 36 possible endings (although early printings bill 40 possible resolutions).
