[edit] History

Formed in San Francisco in 2003 by transplanted Englishman (and main songwriter) Matthew (Ted) Edwards. After a series of successful shows in New York City the group signed with Detroit’s Le Grand Magistery Records (Stars, Momus, A Girl Called Eddy). The groups first release was an EP "Cheap Songs Tell The Truth" in the Fall of 2003. "Cheap Songs…" cover image was a still from Albert Maysles cult documentary Grey Gardens. After hearing their music Mr Maysles personally gave The Music Lovers permission to use the image. In October 2004, The Music Lovers released their first full-length release "The Words We Say Before We Sleep" (this time using a photograph by esteemed American photographer Elliot Erwitt); This record met with great critical acclaim both in the UK (Word, Mojo) and the US (Rolling Stone, Magnet); It also proved popular in France. Throughout 2006 The Music Lovers collaborated with comedian/dancer Margaret Cho on the Sensuous Woman Cabaret – an evening of burlesque, comedy and music (Ms Cho has subsequently filmed 2 videos of the group). 2006 also saw the release of the group’s second full-length record "The Music Lovers Guide for Young People".’ Once again, the record enjoyed much critical praise. A more upbeat record than it’s predecessors whilst still utilizing the eclectic orchestral instrumentation of the earlier records – tympani, celeste, accordion etc.

The groups line-up has been stable for some time and comprises founder members Matthew Edwards on guitars and vocals and Jonathon Brooder on bass-guitar, joined by Ping Chu – drums, Katrina Weeks – Viola (and string arrangements), Bryan Cain – guitars, and Jun Kurihara (ex-Nelories)- piano and accordion.

[edit] Manifesto

It is Mr Edwards stated intent that The Music Lovers will release three full-length albums and 12 months after the release of the third will disband. The group are currently working on their third album ‘Masculine, Feminine’ in guitar-player/producer Bryan Cain’s Noise Syrup studio. The album is now finished and will be released in the early spring of 2008.
