The Mullet

The Mullet refers to the isthmus of the Mullet Peninsula in the barony of Erris, County Mayo in the west of Ireland.

The largest town on "The Mullet" is Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead) in Irish with a population of around 2,000.

Although officially part of the Mayo Gaeltacht, it is in reality an English-speaking town.

Belmullet town is the gateway to the scenic Mullet Peninsula of Erris - an area of North Mayo rich in folklore, tradition, history and culture. Belmullet is a thriving progressive town with many new developments and amenities, not least of which is the famous Carne golf links located against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. Famous also for its fishing lakes, rivers and sea-angling off Broadhaven Bay, Belmullet is a popular and picturesque holiday destination, particularly in mid-August when it has its annual 'Fair Day' to welcome home its many emigrants and visitors from all parts of the globe. There are also plenty of excellent beaches.There are some interesting cliffs and Rock formations on the Northern coast of the Island
