The Methadones were formed by Dan Schafer (Danny Vapid) of Screeching Weasel, Sludgeworth, and The Riverdales in the early 1990s as a side project, which disbanded soon after. After his main bands began to die down, he decided to put a new Methadones line-up together. Initially the new incarnation of the band was a trio consisting of Schafer, B-Face of The Queers on bass, and Dan Lumley on drums. The current lineup includes Schafer (vocals), Mike Byrne (ex-Vindictives, guitar, back up vocals), Pete Mittler (bass, back up vocals), Mike Soucy (drums), and Ken Ortman (ex-Battalion of Saints, guitar, backup vocals).
