[edit] Critical reception

Bryan Patterson from Herald Sun stated that the album was "a ripper". He approved Sebastian's effort on a number of songs, stating "Take Me to the River" as the best song. Patterson commended Sebastian's collaboration with the original artists, while adding his own musical style; "Sebastian nails the tunes. He's respectful yet unafraid to inject them with a joyous individuality".[1] Jolleh Abshar from news.com.au regards The Memphis Album as Sebastian's "best album to date". Abshar commends Sebastian's risk to record a full album of soul classics, and also commented that "the style suits not only his voice, but also his persona".[2]
