Sandy is upset when he sees that Kirsten is not wearing her wedding ring, which she claims to have lost. As a romantic gesture and to make up for the episode with Rebecca, he goes in search of a plastic ring similar to the one he used to propose to Kirsten. Caleb, who misses Lindsay and regrets his treatment of her, accompanies Sandy. Kirsten is smitten when Sandy, who eventually finds a plastic ring at an arcade, gives it to her. Later, without Sandy present, Kirsten takes her real wedding ring out of a drawer and puts it on, revealing that she never lost the ring as she had claimed.

Kirsten and Julie are working on their new magazine when Carter Buckley, their new and less-than-enthusiastic editor, arrives. The three of them go for a drink together at a bar, where Julie runs into her old lover, Lance Baldwin. Recognizing the harm it would do to Julie's reputation, Lance extorts her with an old pornography tape in which the two of them starred in the 1980s, and to which he owns all copyrights. Julie offers him $50,000 not to reveal the tape to anybody, but he wants $500,000.

Ryan, distraught over Lindsay's departure, almost leaves for Chicago to visit her when Seth persuades him otherwise. They instead spend the day doing volunteer work at a shopping mall with Summer and Marissa. Ryan eavesdrops on a conversation in which Marissa, who is experiencing challenges in her relationship with Alex, reveals to Summer that she really has only ever felt connected to Ryan and misses him every day. They all get locked in the mall and decide to spend the night in a department store, where various antics ensue. When security guards arrive, they successfully flee and go to a local diner. The episode ends with Alex sleeping on the couch by herself, Julie thinking about the tape, and Ryan, Marissa, Seth, and Summer talking and laughing in the diner. As Seth puts it at the end of the episode, "the fantastic four is becoming fantastic again."

[edit] Trivia

  • At the end of the episode when Marissa and Ryan are in the diner Marissa says to Ryan "Who are you" Ryan responds by saying, "Whoever you want me to be". These words are the exact same words that they first said to each other in the beginning of season 1.
