[edit] Plot

The hero is a young adult named Roan. His village called Longlight is destroyed and all its people massacred. Longlight was a hidden and peaceful village where all its inhabitants didn't fight or eat meat. The only survivors were Roan and his sister named Stowe. Stowe is taken away by a masked rider. Roan then has a vision, where a rat tells him urgently to leave.

Roan is found by a man named Saint, which is the leader of a religious group whose members are called the Brothers. They worship a god called the Friend. The Brothers train him in combat and many other skills, and discover that he has much talent. However, when the initiation is almost done, he discovers that the Brothers destroyed Longlight, and were going to sacrifice one of them, Feeder, to initiate Roan. He wounds Saint with his weapon, a hook-sword, and horrified with his own act of violence, escapes using Saint's motorcycle.

He gets stuck in a desert when it runs out of fuel. There he meets another young man called Lumpy, whose body is horribly scarred due to Mor-ticks, ticks that burrow into one's skin, which killed all of his family. Everywhere he goes he is feared and stoned, and so lives a life as an outcast. He quickly befriends Roan. Inspired by a story of a hospital that could ease his pains, Lumpy travels with Roan through the desert to try and find it. They have another encounter with the Brothers, but manage to escape them. They wanted to capture Roan.

Roan and Lumpy are rescued by the people of Oasis, an underground civilization. A magic light makes them have incredibly long lifespans, but not be able to have children. Roan has a vision where a goat-woman calls to him, and tells him to keep moving. Travelling with Lumpy, he is poisoned by a lethal Nethervine thorn.

Roan is saved in Fairview by a healer named Alandra, the goat-woman. She along with other people Roan has seen in his dreams and visions are Dirt Eaters. Dirt Eaters eat Dirt, a substance that allows them to wander the Dreamfield, which is like an alternate universe, but connected to the world. Alandra shows him how to get to the Dreamfield. He is able to do it without Dirt. She also tells him the position of his sister, the City. It is an extremely strong city that rules most of the nearby areas. Alandra wants him to help her in saving the children of Fairview, as they are sold to there to replace body parts of the Elders, the rulers of the City. Roan helps her take the children to a safe place which they call Newlight. Soon after, all the fourteen children fall into a sudden coma. Roan will need to use his combat skills as well as his skill in the Dreamfield, to rescue both the children and his sister in the City.
