The Locker Room (AKA The Tom Harris Chevrolet Locker Room) is a Canadian television show broadcasting from Nanaimo, British Columbia. It airs in Nanaimo on Shaw TV and is hosted by "Extreme" Joe Cooper and Julie Sumanik.
[edit] Format
A typical Locker Room episode is roughly ten minutes in length. It begins with a cold intro, usually featuring Joe and Julie in some humorous situation. Past cold intros have included Joe "killing time" by destroying a wristwatch, Ex Co-host Holly Robinson racing down a ski hill to stop Joe from eating yellow snow, and a "Sin City" parody entitled "Sports City".
After the cold intro, the opening theme music plays. The music is accompanied by one of five music videos featuring the theme music's creators, Nanaimo ska band The Kiltlifters. Four of these videos revolve around a sport -- bowling, hockey, swimming and curling -- while the fifth is a compilation of the other four videos.
The body of the show features Joe and Julie learning about a sport. Usually, each sport is presented by a local sporting group or club and includes a brief history with background information. After learning the basics of the sport, Joe and Julie then compete against each other for bragging rights. Past sports and competitions have included archery, bungee jumping, figure skating, logger sports, Brazilian Jujitzu with former UFC Champion Royce Gracie, Sports Fishing and Futsal (another form of indoor soccer).
The end of the show is composed of outtakes, over which the end credits and ending theme music play.
[edit] Common themes
While each episode focuses on a different sport, certain themes carry over from show to show. For example:
- A disgruntled goalie, referred to simply as The Goalie, often shows up in the cold intros to try and stop the show in retribution for all the goalie jokes in earlier seasons.
- Ex Co-host Holly was a fierce competitor and took the competition between herself and Joe very seriously. Joe takes a less hardline approach, often saying, "It's not about the competition," regardless of who wins.
- In most cold intros, Holly either won or somehow had the upper hand over Joe.
- New Co-host Julie is not as competitive but is just as athletic, she takes each show as an opportunity to learn about something new.
