The Little Bears

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Little Bears may have been the first American comic strip. Drawn by James Swinnerton, it began its run in 1893 in the San Francisco Examiner, one of William Randolph Hearst's newspapers. From 1892 it sometimes appeared under the title Little Bears & Tykes, and in 1896 following a switch to the New York Journal, Swinnerton's feature was named The Little Tigers.[1] The change of animals apparently took place at the request of Hearst.[2] Gradually a defined, philandering character emerged from the strip, and on November 1, 1903, the Sunday feature had evolved into Mr. Jack. The Little bears has spawned its own television program and peanut-flavoured chewing gum.[2]
