[edit] Background

It was originally supposed to be released on December 18, 2007. Lil Wayne revealed the exact details behind The Leak's release stating,

We got some new news," Weezy said. "[The December 18 release] is gonna be called Tha Carter III, but it's gonna be called The Leak as well because I get leaked so much. My music got leaked this whole year. One thing I noticed, when another person's album gets leaked, it's a whole thing; they're distraught. When my song gets leaked, people call and say, 'It's the greatest song. Can I have it for this album?' Or, 'Can I put it on this soundtrack? Can we get the ringtone?' It's never, 'Damn, dude, your music leaked.' So what we feel, we're gonna give you what you want. We're gonna give you the leak. Every song that was leaked is coming out on December 18 — and we have four new songs. The song 'Gossip' is gonna be the first single from that album. I'mma shoot the video for that in about a week.[1]

[edit] Songs

HipHopDX.com reported that the track "Gossip" would originally be included on the Tha Carter III and is indirectly aimed at 50 Cent,[3] but would actually turn out to have no relevance to 50 Cent as confirmed by Lil Wayne in an interview with VIBE and XXL.[2][4] Lil Wayne told VIBE the following about the supposed "beef",

I'm not gonna murder a rapper, that's like a cliche. I don't wanna kill 50 Cent! Because he got fans. I don't know who's riding with him! I need to beef with niggas that I know. I don't know how many people like 50 Cent. So if he said Lil Wayne's a hoe, Lil Wayne's a hoe. The word whore, that's a nigga who be smashing a lot, like fucking a lot.[4]

He also denied to XXL directly, and confirmed that the song doesn't take any jabs at 50 Cent, while telling MTV the same.[2][5] He explained to MTV that the song was recorded in 2006 and that he doesn't "make records or say anything about people – Everyone knows that."[5] The song was due to be released between August and September 2007, however Lil Wayne premiered the song at the 2007 BET Hip Hop Awards.[6]

"Gossip" will be the first single from The Leak.[1][2]

"I'm Me" will be the second single from the EP. Though not released yet, it had already charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

The 5 tracks from The Leak will appear on the deluxe edition of the Tha Carter III.[7]
