[edit] Plot Synopsis
The book resumes the narrative of John Perry, now retired form the CDF, having achieved the rank of Major. Perry is now retired and living on the human colony of Huckleberry, having established a home with his wife Jane Sagan and adopted daughter Zoe.
The conflict of the story revolves around a collection of alien races that call themselves "The Conclave". It threatens to stop all colonization of any planets by anyone other than members of their organization. The Colonial Defense Force, CDF, decided long ago not to join, and begins a large-scale plan to destabilize the already fragile Conclave leadership. Instead of through military strength, Perry uses every resource at his disposal to prevent himself, his new family, his entire colony, and all of humanity from being eradicated.
