[edit] Historical Background
The Langham, Melbourne is located near to the Yarra River, which is one of the cleanest capital city rivers in the world. The headwaters of the Yarra River flow from the pristine flanks of Mt Baw Baw in Victoria's West Gippsland region. It is a 242 km water course and provides drinking water to about 2.6 million households. Because of the major clean-up campaigns of the late 1970s and 1980s, the river has become home to fishes and occasional dolphin. [3]
The discovery of the fresh Yarra water was crucial to the development in Melbourne. In early years, the rock barrier ad water cascades separate the salt water from the fresh water used for drinking, bathing and fishing. [3] Ships even found it difficult to travel upstream and turn around in the river. For those who want to travel and carried their animals from bank to bank, they usually took ferries and punts to cross the river. [3] As people found it inconvenient, they came up an idea to establish the bridge. The first bridge at the main Swanston St-St Kilda Road was built in 1845, in a timber structure. The current Princess Bridge, opened in 1888, resembles London's Blackfriars Bridge nowadays. [3]
Surrounded by the filthiest piece of water, The Langham, Melbourne is regarded as one of the 5 star quality and service to a 5 star location in Melbourne today.
