[edit] History of the Knox School

The Knox School was founded as Knoxfield College in February 1982. The school took over the Bialik School campus at 220 Burwood Highway.

The first principal was Dulcie Flinn, who was previously of the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne. From 1982 to 1985 there were eight portable classrooms - five for the Junior School and three for the Senior School. In 1985 Stage II building work was done.

The second principal was Baxter Holly. Under Holly's leadership, Knoxfield College developed Stage III, including the Performing Arts Centre and the Art Gallery. 1987 saw the first Year 12 class.

1992 saw the purchase of a 1.6 hectare block of land adjoining the school from a plant nursery. That area is now the Tew Field (named after Wally Tew, a local councillor), the school's synthetic hockey pitch. This was opened in 1996.

The third principal was Tony Conabere. He was appointed in July 1995. 1996 was another year of building, including the Pre-Prep campus and Tew Field, as well as the adjoining Pavilion.

In 1998 and 2000 the Knox School was ranked in Victoria's top ten schools, and in 1998 won the gold medal for Assessment Practice.

2000 saw the renaming of the school to Knox Grammar, however only a year later the school was further renamed to The Knox School after a "disagreement" with Knox Grammar School over the naming.[citation needed]

In 2002 the Information Common was opened by the then-Governor of Victoria, John Landy. This building incorporates a library, many computer facilities and a multimedia studio. The Knox Alumni had their first Annual General Meeting, and a gala dinner was held at the Crown Palladium.

In 2004 the fourth and current principal, Suzanne McChesney, was appointed. Also in that year the Philip Island Discovery Campus was purchased, but the project was scrapped due to the large amount of renovation required before it would become usable.

In 2005, the Junior School building was named the D. G. M. Flinn building after the school's first principal.

2006 saw the renaming of the Arts Centre to the Founders' Building, in honour of those who started the school.

In 2007, The Knox School celebrated its 25th anniversary, along with unofficially opening its new auditorium, and beginning renovations to part of the Senior School, with renovations to the science labs and the conversion of two rooms into a hospitality kitchen. This is expected to be completed by the start of the 2008 school year. The school also contributed to the building of a crossing over Burwood Highway, the main road students have to cross to catch outbound buses. An issue arose with the lights in which the timing was screwed up and a certain student, who for privacy sake will remain un-named, took it upon himself to have the problem resolved with no help from the school!!!!

Also, a gala dinner was held at the Crown Palladium to celebrate the 25th Anniversary, which was combined with the Year 12 Valedictory dinner.

[edit] Seek Wisdom And Understanding

Our school means so many things
As varied as our background
We learn play share in the pride
Of all we do

And as we strive to grow through the years
With knowledge and understanding
The Knox School
We're here to give our best for all

[edit] Fly Like A Falcon

This is our school, So let’s sing our song out loud
With standards and high values, Knox does Australia proud
Like falcons we’re decisive, Courageous, Swift and Bold
And we’ll cherish all our memories, As the years unfold

Fly like a falcon
Reach for the stars
Seek wisdom and understanding

It’s yours, it’s mine, it’s ours.

[edit] FAQ

1. What are your class sizes?

All class sizes from Prep to Year 12 are capped at 24 students.

2. How many students are there at the School?

There are approximately 800 students (boys and girls) across the entire School from Pre Prep to Year 12.

3. Is The Knox School affiliated with a religion?

No. The Knox School is a non-denominational school, welcoming students from all faiths and backgrounds.

4. How much are the fees?

The Knox School is an independent school and our total fees (including compulsory levies) range from $7,900 to $14,920 p.a. Please contact the School Registrar for a detailed Fee Schedule on +61 3 8805 3814 or registrar@knox.vic.edu.au

5. When is the best time to enrol?

Early enrolment is always recommended as it can be difficult to foresee what the demand for a particular year level will be. Some areas such as the Pre Prep and Prep year levels are restricted in the numbers they can take and therefore fill up very quickly. The demand for students entering the school at Year 7 has also grown rapidly with full intakes in the past few years.

6. How do I enrol?

An Application for Enrolment form can be obtained from the Registrar and needs to be completed and returned with the $250 enrolment fee. This fee is non refundable and per child. Early enrolment (at least a year prior to entry) should safely secure a place at the required year level.

7. Are there waiting lists?

Yes. The demand for some year levels necessitates the need for children to be waitlisted. To avoid being placed on a waiting list early enrolment is highly recommended (at least a year prior to entry).

8. Is there compulsory Saturday sport?

No. There is no Saturday sport at The Knox School.

9. Does The Knox School offer a bus service? Yes. We offer five chartered bus routes from surrounding suburbs, comprising of two coach services run specifically for The Knox School and three of our own buses. Additional bus stops and new bus routes will be considered given demand. Click here for more information about our location and transport options.

10. Can I come and see the School?

Yes! The Knox School invites prospective parents and their children to enjoy a Tour with the Principal. There are nine Tours with the Principal held throughout the year. These tours are an opportunity to observe classrooms in action and our facilities, and to talk with the Principal, Ms. Suzanne McChesney or the relevant Head of School about the School’s programs and offerings. We also offer one-on-one School Tours on request. Click here to find out more about our Tours with the Principal.

11. Can my child come and spend a day at The Knox School with no obligation to enrol?

Yes. Our ‘Spend a Day’ program is open to students who are considering entering Year 1 to Year 12 at The Knox School. Prospective students are immersed in The Knox School, attending classes, excursions, going to assemblies, events or even the canteen for lunch, as if they were a current student. Click here to find out more about Spending a Day at The Knox School.
