The planets Janus Prime and Menda are diametrically opposed in orbit round a vast red giant star. When the Doctor and Sam arrive on Janus Prime, they find themselves in the middle of a war between rival humans colonising the area. The Doctor and Sam have to figure out the mysteries surrounding the actual planets and then they must discover the agents which are inflaming both sets of colonist's to the point of almost total war. They discover the answers are to do with the indigninous population of spiders and their connection to the planets.
