[edit] Synopsis

Michael burns his foot while grilling bacon on his George Foreman grill. While Dwight is coming to "rescue" him, he crashes his car and suffers a concussion, which makes him more likeable and much nicer to his co-workers, particularly Pam. Michael is upset with the staff's lack of compassion towards his "disability". Jim and Michael take Dwight to the hospital where Michael insists that his burned foot is a more serious injury than Dwight's blunt force trauma. Before they go, Pam bids "goodbye" to the concussed Dwight, aware that she will probably never see the good-natured version of Dwight Schrute ever again.

[edit] Deleted scenes

The Season Two DVD contains a number of deleted scenes from this episode. Notable cut scenes include:

  • Jim explains that he doesn't use his grill as a pillow.
  • Michael admits to enjoying popping bubble wrap.
  • Michael describes the powers of dark meat chicken.
  • Dwight behaves incoherently.
  • Dwight gets scared at the hospital.

When the episode was rebroadcast on March 29, 2007 as part of an "HR Nightmares" marathon, a brief interview with Toby was added as an epilogue. In it, Toby explains that Michael invented a safer version of the George Foreman grill. "He called it the 'Magic No-Ouchie Meat Machine.' It's actually a George Foreman grill in a bunny cage." This segment is included on the Season 3 DVD set in a bonus material section of wraparound interviews with Toby.

[edit] Notes

  • According to an interview at the Office Convention, Mindy Kaling notes how she wrote Michael's explanation as an elaborate story. However Steve Carell just read it fast and unapologetic like a list. Kaling notes how she was surprised at how different the reading was from the way she imagined it. However she liked how Carell did it better.
  • When fans were asked in the summer of 2006 to vote on NBC.com for their favorite episode, "The Injury" was selected and aired again on August 17.
  • This episode is B.J. Novak's favorite of the first three seasons because it started with a crazy idea in the writers' room and "spun out of control" into absurdity.[1]
  • Michael's interview at the beginning of the episode is Jenna Fischer's favorite of the series so far.[2]
  • This is the sole episode Rainn Wilson and Steve Carell submitted for Emmy consideration in the acting category for 2006.
  • Several versions of the Dwight-Angela scene were filmed, including Dwight spanking her, swatting her, trying to kiss her, and picking her up by her butt. After many takes, actress Angela Kinsey ended up with a big bruise on her butt.[3] In the end, "spanking her" was used.
  • The disabled icons Michael uses for his presentation are Helen Keller, Larry Flynt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Tom Hanks (in Forrest Gump), and Tom Hanks again (in Big).
  • This is the introduction of Billy Merchant, the building supervisor.
  • One small bit in the Billy Merchant scene was cut out. At one point in the scene, Michael asks the employees, "Do you notice anything different about Billy?" and they all stare in horror. Cut from the scene is when, after they don't react, Michael grabs one of the wheels on Billy's wheelchair and begins to roll him back and forth and asks, "Still don't notice anything different?"[3]
  • When Billy Merchant apologizes for being late, he explains that someone parked in the disabled parking spot. From Michael's reaction, it's clear that Michael told Dwight to park there.
  • Producer Greg Daniels loves the scene when Michael tries to get Pam to put butter (Country Crock) on his foot. Says Daniels, "It's one thing she won't do."[4]
  • Kinsey is caught "out of character" in the opening moments of this episode. While Oscar talks about The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Brian Baumgartner and Kinsey can be seen in the background laughing. She admitted in her MySpace blog: "We were just being ourselves goofing around and didn't realize they had already started rolling the camera!"[5]
  • This was one of six episodes that was submitted to Emmy voters for Best Comedy consideration, which they went on to win. The other five were "The Dundies", "Booze Cruise", "Christmas Party", "The Secret" and "Valentine's Day".
  • In naming the folder, Dwight types his name at least 146 times. When naming a folder, one can use as many as 255 letters or symbols.
  • Angela selects a Gertrude Hawk chocolate bar from the vending machine. Gertrude Hawk Chocolates are made locally, in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. The wrapper colors indicate the flavor; the brown wrapper of the bar she selected indicates that it is milk chocolate.
  • Dwight's doctor orders a CAT scan and the exam room is labeled as such, but Michael is ordered to remove all metal from his person as if it were an MRI.
  • Kelly mentions an episode of Grey's Anatomy involving a Lifeguard... there is no such episode.
  • Dwight and Pam make reference to the mp3 player that Roy purchased for Pam as the fictional Prism Durosport. When the mp3 player is shown, it is a Creative Zen Micro.
