The Indian High School in Dubai (IHS or TIHS). IHS is the first expatriate educational institution to be established in Dubai in 1957 at which point it was called Bharatiya Vidyalaya. The land on which the School is located was granted to the School by the Late Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The school was established in 1961 with a view to providing education to children of Indian expats. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Dubai, and is permanently affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi. It is a member of Dubai Quality Group and has acquired ISO : 9001 : 2000 Certification. The certification by Lloyds Register of Britain acknowledges the quality management system and the contribution of the Indian community-run school in giving international quality education to expatriates. The school has also received Sheikh Rashid bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished School and School Administration (2002).

Today the school as grown from its initial enrollment of 8 students to over 8,200 students. The centrepiece of the School complex is the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, which can accommodate about 1800 guests and which has been the venue of many significant events.

[edit] Criticisms

[original research?]

The school has come under a great deal of criticism in the recent years. With the introduction of the Grass Turf replacing the earlier sand ground, students were no longer allowed to play sports or even walk on it. Instead the ground was reserved for the sports teams only which clearly consisted of a minority of the students.

The school has spent considerable amounts of money on beautifying the buildings and structures. Many argue that by this the school has looks less like a school and more like a 'theme park'; and by these efforts the school shows signs of being a corporate entity instead of an educational one. Proponents of this argument point to the change in title of Dr Ashok Kumar from Principal to C.E.O

[edit] Visitors to the School

IHS has been visited by many important political, religious and sports personalities. The list includes:- A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (President of India), Shashi Tharoor (Contestant for the post of "Secretary General" in the U.N.), Sania Mirza (Tennis player of India ),AC Milan (The world famous football club which include players like kaka etc.),Venu Rajamony(Indian Council General in Dubai).

The school has also been visited by a number of local rulers, ambassadors to different countries, etc.
