The Independent school was founded in 1980 by Jean Garvey of Wichita, Kansas. Its original location was an empty nursing home. It was 5000 square feet with eight small classrooms that were eventually combined to make four classrooms and a library area. It had a larger "living room" that served as a lunch room, a gathering place, and even an aerobics area; an office; a kitchen; and a basement, where gym class and even indoor recess were held. From there the school quickly grew and Mrs. Garvey decided to have a new campus built on her residence and husband's small golf course on East Douglas Street. A lower school building was built, then later a new building housing the upper and middle schools was constructed. As the student body continued to grow, separate middle school and upper school liberal arts buildings were constructed. The school now has over 750 students in Kindergarten through 12th Grade. The current graduating class has over fifty students with the high school consistently growing in numbers. The school hired a new head of school in 2006, Mr. Ed Walters, after the departure of former head of school and co-founder Mrs. Karen Norton.
The buildings are easily recognized for their unusual paint colors: salmon terracotta (known as Garvey Pink to the students), and cyan.

In 2005 the school was graced with the award of a Blue Ribbon School (Part of the No Child Left Behind Act), that exemplfies excellence academically, in the community, and athletically. The school offers rigorous academics to suit the needs of the students, including the most academically advanced. Many Honors and Advanced Placement classes are offered, which include the following: English Literature, English Language and Composition, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Calculus BC, US Government, and US History.

As of the end of the 2007 athletic year the "WI" logo signifying Wichita Independent will no longer be in use. All logos used on official Independent School gear will only display the Panther logo or the TIS acronym for The Independent School.
[edit] Accreditation
The Independent School is currently (2007-08) accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The school is undertaking to convert accreditation by 2010 to the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). ISACS accreditation is not currently recognized by the State of Kansas.
