The Hughleys is an American sitcom that aired on ABC from September 22, 1998 to May 22, 2000 and on UPN from September 4, 2000 to May 20, 2002. Many believed that the show was moved from ABC to UPN, because ABC felt The Hughleys was too racial for their television network. ABC tried to cancel the show because they felt it was too offensive. UPN then picked up the show. Some critics and viewers felt that the show was modeled after The WB sitcom, The Parent 'Hood.
The plot is centered on Darryl (D.L. Hughley) and Yvonne (Elise Neal) moving into a primarily white suburb after Darryl becomes a successful vending machine salesman and starts his own company. They try to adapt to having things better than they are used to and raising their two children - Michael (Dee Jay Daniels) and Sydney (Ashley Monique Clark). Darryl's friend Milsap (John Henton) (from the "old neighborhood") often stopped by to help them out.
When the series premiered on September 22, 1998 on ABC, it had the largest ratings (despite actual ratings).
Including finishing out the series cast was Marietta DePrima and Eric Allen Kramer playing Dave and Sally Rogers, a primary white couple that live in the suburbs, and Darryl's happy-go-lucky mother Hattie Mae Hughley, played by Emmy Award-nominee Marla Gibbs, who shot to fame on the sitcoms, The Jeffersons, and 227 and his father, played by Ellis Williams.
In return Telma Hopkins, who is better known for playing Rachel Crawford in the popular ABC sitcom, Family Matters and as Big Mona on Half and Half portrayed Yvonne's mother, Paulette Williams, opposite Hopkins, Emmy-nominated veteran television actor Sherman Hemsley, who is better known for portraying George Jefferson on The Jeffersons, portrayed Yvonne's father, Mr. Williams–who did not get along with Darryl, because in Darryl's own words, thought of him as a "jackass".
And also in the series' cast comedienne Adele Givens portrayed Yvonne's older sister Shari Williams, a wise-cracking, back-talking evil sister-in-law to Darryl.
The set used for The Hughleys is the same set they used for The WB/The CW comedy Reba after The Hughleys ended.
The Hughleys which was a starring vehicle for comedian D.L. Hughley and television actress Elise Neal, was an African-American television program that featured a black family that moved to the a suburban neighborbood in Southern California, populated predominantly by white people. The show spent two seasons on ABC, but was canceled due to poor ratings. UPN picked up the show in the fall of 2000 and it aired in the Monday night lineup along Moesha, The Parkers and Girlfriends. While The Parkers and Girlfriends had improved ratings, The Hughleys had a series finale after its fourth season.
The series had many guest stars such as: pop singer/actress Ashley Tisdale, who is better known for her role as Maddie Fitzpatrick on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer/actress Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child fame, including Lil' Romeo, Gary Coleman, Adele Givens, Telma Hopkins, Sherman Hemsley, Vivica A. Fox.
Reruns of "The Hughleys" will begin in April of 2008 on TV One.
[edit] Series finale
Like most popular television programs, some usually ends with a cliffhanger, on The Hughleys two-part series finale entitled "It's a Girl!" (aired on May 13 and May 20, 2002), where Darryl Hughley's niece, Carly (played by R&B/pop singer, Kelly Rowland) getting ready for college (the college was unknown), with peace, tranquility and none of her relatives (implying The entire Hughleys clan.), and receiving a unexpected visit from her cousins Sydney and Michael. However, Darryl discovers with his old flame from High school, Camille (played by Susan Dalian) learning that Camille has a daughter. Yvonne, who is now angry and disappointed that Darryl did not tell her the truth before they had gotten married, (the information ended on the final episode (part 2 of "It's a Girl)).
However, the consequences came when UPN cancelled the series and it was not renewed for the 2002-2003 network season.
However, fans and television critics said that if there was a fifth season (which would have been the 2002-2003 season of the show.) It would not be a Hughleys show anymore, because after Yvonne learned the awful truth from Darryl, she winds up devastated and divorcing him, or she would have tried to learn to accept the past, but at the series' ending, there was no to avail, UPN agreed the cancel the series with a two-part cliffhanger episode.
