The Hong Kong Melody Makers (Traditional Chinese: 香港旋律) is a Hong Kong youth choir founded in 2004 by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups with sponsorship from The Dragon Foundation. The HKMM aims to reflect Hong Kong’s vivacious, creative spirit, giving voice to its cosmopolitan vitality through songs.
The HKMM holds concerts every half year. Some concerts are free of charge so as to serve the community, enrich Hong Kong’s cultural life and promote choral music in the territory.
Choir members, ranging from 16 to 30 years old, are mostly college students, primary and secondary school teachers. There are approximately 40 members in the group.

The group make radio and television appearances and frequent performances in the community.
[edit] Concerts
Besides the annual concerts in April, The HKMM organizes community concerts regularly. The choir also collaborates with other choirs, orchestras, and different performing arts groups. In 2007 annual concert, the group performed a cappella music with Cantopop singer Hins Cheung. Distinguished guest conductors are invited to perform with the choir. In Fall 07, the group performed 4 Brahms and a Brucker Lieder with guest conductor Carmen Koon.

The choir is often called upon to perform at functions and events for various public and private organizations.

As the music ambassador of Hong Kong, the travels to Mainland China and overseas to participate in music camps, international choral conference, and cultural exchange programmes.
[edit] Supplementary training
Master Classes are held to instruct members in singing, dancing, acting and other theatrical techniques. Some of the former guest instructors are Yuki Ip (Soprano), Melody Sze (Mezzo-soprano) and Mohamed Drissi (Artistic Director of HK3AMI).
[edit] Repertoires
The HKMM performs a wide variety of musical genres and styles, from classical to contemporary and from traditional Chinese folk songs to musicals. Some of the pieces, especially a cappella, are arranged by the Music Director and the choir members. Committed to supporting new music by local composers, the choir frequently presents premieres and newly commissioned works. Until November 2006, the HKMM has already commissioned more than 10 arrangements and 5 original works, including an original musical.
The HKMM takes a step beyond the formal restraints of conventional choral singing. Most of the performances are enriched by acting, choreographed dancing or witty dialogue.
[edit] a cappella Ensembles
The HKMM has 2 small a cappella ensembles. Their repertoires include barbershop-style singing, doo-wop, vocal jazz, and pop. Membership of these groups is open to members of the choir and auditions are carried out regularly. Group members are required to attend extra rehearsals on top of those scheduled for the whole choir. Small a cappella ensembles in HKMM include an all-male group Potenza and an all-female group Cadenza.
[edit] Music Director
The music director of the choir is Patrick Chiu, who obtained his Bachelor’s degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received his Master’s Degree in choral conducting at The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
He has been active on the local music scene as well. He is a member of the contemporary a cappella group, The Gay Singers. He has also been appointed a member of the 2006 Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choirs Festival Organising Committee.
