The Grocer

The Grocer is a British magazine devoted to grocery sales, published by the William Reed Group. It has been published since 1862.[1] It includes reports on a range of food issues. It won the Subscription Magazine of the Year award at the Periodical Publishers' Association's 1999 competition.[2] According to the publishers, in the first half of 2007, total press circulation of The Grocer brand was 69 million.[3]

The Grocer provided inspiration for food writer Joanna Blythman in preparing her 2004 book Shopped.

A popular feature of the magazine is 'The Grocer 33'. This is a survey of each of the 5[citation needed] leading supermarkets' (ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose) prices and availability on a range of 33 popular lines and published in each issue. The survey is conducted by "mystery shoppers" and different branches in varying parts of the country are used for each week's survey. The supermarkets place prominence on this feature and ASDA heavily promotes the fact it has been the lowest-priced supermarket in The Grocer's survey for the past ten years.
