The Great Company (Catalan)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Company was a band of Latin mercenaries led by Genoese and Catalan mercenaries who originally fought under Byzantine Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1332) against the Turks. They turned against Andronicus and seized control of much of Greece from 1311 to 1326, purportedly as a fiefdom of the House of Aragon but actually as local warlords. After 1326 the Kingdom of Sicily acquired control of Athens and other areas of Greece formerly dominated by The Great Company.
