TV.com summary |
The Flintstone Kids was a 60-minute animated television series spin-off of The Flintstones which followed the adventures of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty as 8 to 10-year-olds with pet Dino. It aired from 1986 to 1988 on ABC, and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It only starred characters which were seen in the original TV series, and the child personas of the known characters were particularly like their adult ones. The series contained a total of 75 episodes, with The Flintstone Kids comprised of 24 half-hour episodes.
There was also a comic book series from Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel Comics).
Aside from the 30-minute episodes of The Flintstone Kids, the series contained three more segments:
- Flintstone Funnies
- Captain Caveman and Son
- Dino's Dilemmas

[edit] Notes
- This series is part of a popular fad in the 80's in which studios had begun to create shows featuring younger versions of established cartoon characters.
- A PSA commercial for seat belt safety was created based on The Flintstone Kids, and ran for several years after the show concluded its run.[citation needed]
- Bumper Robinson was the only child actor for both seasons of the series (aged 12-14). Only for season 2 was Scott Menville another child actor, from the age of 16 to the age of 17. Everyone else was a cast of adults.
[edit] Goofs
- Rocky Ratrock's real first name is said to be Francis in Season 1, but in the Season 2 episode "Rocky's Rocky Road", Rocky's mother says his first name is Rockford.
- Actually, Fred is the only Flintstone there, as Wilma is not married to Fred yet, and Pebbles was not born yet, but Dino might possibly be a Flintstone though.
[edit] Controversy and discontinuity
The series has "retconned" many aspects of the original show leading some fans to question its canonicity. In the original Flintstones series, conflicting accounts of Fred and Wilma's first meeting are given. In the episode "Love Letters On The Rocks" it is indicated that Wilma and Fred knew each other as teenagers and attended the same high school while a later episode, "Bachelor Daze", had them meet as young adults. Also in the original series, Dino first appeared in the episode "The Snorkasaurus Hunter" with a different color and the ability to talk (even though his character was in the opening credits of every episode prior), whereas this series has him as Fred's childhood pet.
There are many elements of the show that have been incorporated into subsequent Flintstone productions, leading to the conclusion that Hanna-Barbera is treating this series as canon. For example, one of the characters originating in this series, Philo Quartz, later appeared as an adult in A Flintstones Christmas Carol from 1994. Also, this was the first series in which Wilma's last name was expressly stated as Slaghoople whereas the original series had it as Pebble. This name change was also carried over.
