"The First Night" is an R&B song written by American rapper-songwriter Jermaine Dupri, Tamara Savage, Marilyn McLeod, and Pam Sawyer for Monica's second studio album The Boy is Mine (1998). Produced by Dupri, and built around a sample of Diana Ross' "Love Hangover", the song was released as the album's second single. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for five non-consecutive weeks in the fall of 1998.
In the song Monica informs a potential lover that, although she would like to, she does not "get down on the first night." The single became Monica's first solo number one hit, as her previous single "The Boy Is Mine", a duet with singer Brandy, reached number one as well. The music video for the song was directed by Joseph Kahn, who also directed The Boy Is Mine.
A remix of the track dubbed the "So So Def Mix" appeared on the Angel of Mine CD single.
