[edit] "The Eye"
Bridgewater has a surrealistic nightmare in which she visits the Sunshine Motel and finds Miller desperately trying to free Anna from Room 9; Kreutzfeld spends time with Isaac before leaving his home; in Room 10, Miller and Bloom look through the rest of the Polaroids, but can’t determine what they mean; Kreutzfeld visits the Sood in Las Vegas, Nevada to purchase a first edition copy of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” with an Object chart drawn inside the back cover that was once owned by a Collector named John Clark.
When a disturbance breaks out in the storefront, Kreutzfeld attempts to escape through a back exit, only to be grabbed by Miller and pulled into Room 10; Kreutzfeld explains to Miller that the Object Map in “Cuckoo’s Nest” is the combination for the Collector’s Vault, and Miller questions Kreutzfeld about the Occupant, which Kreutzfeld claims explains why the Vault is twice referred to as “the Tomb” in the Collector’s literature.
Bloom and Mehta examine the filmstrip procured from Jacobs; Bridgewater is deemed medically fit for discharge, but refuses to leave New Mexico until she finds Ruber; Ruber wakes up in the desert with the Polaroid marked “Gallup” and begins trekking across the wasteland; Margaret learns that she was passed over for leadership of the Pittsburgh cell of the Order for allowing Ruber to steal the Deck of Cards and the Watchbox, but swears to Parchman that she will retrieve those Objects; Miller and Kreutzfeld visit Suzie Kang and pay $12,000 to determine the whereabouts of the Scissors, which are in the possession of Noraida Figueroa in Washington, D.C.
Miller and Kreutzfeld travel to Washington, D.C. to acquire the Scissors from Figueroa, who nearly throws Miller off the fourth floor balcony of her apartment before Kreutzfeld uses the Flask to subdue her; Ruber continues his trek across the Chihuahuan Desert, passing out under the heat of the sun; Bloom analyzes the filmstrip, determining that a second person was inside Room 9 when Conroy’s experiment went awry; Miller realizes that the Polaroids are a map to the Vault, and retrieves them from a locker at a bus station in Florida; Miller and Kreutzfeld determine that the Polaroids are pictures of a prison.
Ruber lies in the desert with the Polaroid marked “Gallup”; Miller meets Bloom at a diner to pick up the Legion’s files on the original Collectors in order to access the Vault with Kreutzfeld, and Bloom warns Miller that Kreutzfeld will kill him once he accesses the Vault; Bridgewater takes a leave of absence from the Pittsburgh PD; Miller waits at the abandoned shack outside Gallup until a teenage girl arrives, then uses the Key to find Jabrowski at the Lucky 7 Bowling alley; Miller borrows the Bus Ticket from Jabrowski, who warns Miller not to enter the Vault; working with Kreutzfeld, Miller finds that John Clark was a guard at the Kellogg County state prison, and determines that the Vault is beneath the prison.
Using a specially-installed door, Miller and Kreutzfeld travel to the Kellogg County state prison in Nevada, where they use Room 10 to access the fallout shelter beneath the prison; Bloom and Mehta determine that the second person in Room 9 was the Occupant from Room 10; Miller and Kreutzfeld use the Scissors to break open a sealed wall in the fallout bunker, and they use the Clock to sublimate the brass welds of a second door; Bloom compares a list of Objects to the collection nailed to the door of Room 9 in the filmstrip, and realizes that Karl Kreutzfeld owns the Ashtray, the Watchbox, the Clock, the Pack of Cigarettes, the Toothbrush, and the Nail Clippers — six of the seven Objects from Conroy’s experiment, while Miller has the seventh: the Key.
Miller and Kreutzfeld access the Collector’s Vault, where Miller discovers that Kreutzfeld has been using the Quarter to bring the memory of his son Isaac, who has been dead for nine years, back to life for a few days at a time; Kreutzfeld steals the Glass Eye from the Vault and steals the Key from Miller, leaving Miller trapped in the Vault; dehydrated and suffering from heat exhaustion, Ruber has a vision from the Polaroid of himself as the Occupant, and is rescued by helicopter; Miller uses the Bus Ticket to escape the Collector’s Vault and transport himself to the abandoned shack outside Gallup where he meets Jabrowski and Bloom.
Miller and Jabrowski discover that the Bus Ticket was originally from Willowbrook, Arizona, and head there to locate the Occupant; instead, Miller finds an article about an unidentified man who accosted the unmarried Mabel Smith in 1961, claiming to be her husband; Bridgewater tracks the prisoner transport van to the Sunshine Motel; Kreutzfeld watches the original Conroy Experiment film in his study; Miller and Jabrowski visit Mabel Smith, town librarian, who gives them the Wedding Photo of herself and the Occupant, given to her by the Occupant, that she claims was never taken, despite the inscription “Summer 1959” on the back in her handwriting.
[edit] "The Prime Object" / "The Occupant"
Bridgewater arrives at the Sunshine Motel before getting a call from the Gallup sheriff informing her that Ruber has been picked up and is at the hospital; Miller and Jabrowski travel to Las Vegas to meet with the Sood, who may possess information regarding the Prime Object. It is here that Wally and Miller part ways, and Miller goes on alone. He runs into Montague, whose face bears traces of a beating. Miller and Montague visit with the Sood, who creates a computer-generated map that tracks the movement of every Object since 1961, revealing a dead-zone around Green Valley, Arizona; Bloom and Mehta plan an incursion on Kreutzfeld’s residence; Kreutzfeld performs surgery on himself to replace his right eye with the Glass Eye.
Bloom’s team launches a raid on Kreutzfeld’s home, but Kreutzfeld uses the power of the Glass Eye to kill Bloom’s team and flee through the specially-installed door into Room 10; Bloom gets a shot off at Kreutzfeld before he can close the door, and follows him into Room 10, where Kreutzfeld cannot heal himself; Miller travels to Green Valley and locates the unidentified Occupant — who calls himself Eddie McCleister — at the Green Valley Psychiatric Hospital; the Occupant tries to shoot himself with Miller’s gun, but the bullet is stopped on impact because the Occupant, like all Objects, is indestructible in the real world; the Occupant affirms that Anna is still in Room 10, but that Miller can’t find her because “there’s more than one.”
Kreutzfeld, Bloom and Anthony exit Room 10 through Room 8 of the Sunshine Motel, and Kreutzfeld uses the Glass Eye to heal his bullet-wound; Ruber wakes up in the hospital moments before Margaret is set to kill him, and stops her by telling her about the Occupant and claiming to be the Prophet of the Objects; Bridgewater arrives at the hospital as Margaret helps Ruber leave, and Ruber admits to killing Destefano; Bridgewater pulls her gun to shoot Ruber, but the Eyeglasses prevent the sidearm from firing.
Kreutzfeld uses the Ashtray, the Pack of Cigarettes, the Clock, the Nail Clippers, the Watchbox, the Toothbrush, and the Key to recreate the Conroy Experiment at Room 9 of the Sunshine Motel in an attempt to resurrect his dead son Isaac, but destroys himself and Anthony in the process; Miller delivers the Occupant to the Sunshine Motel, where they enter Room 9 and seal the tear in reality caused by Kreutzfeld’s experiment; back in Room 10, McCleister explains that there is no Prime Object, and that the only difference between him and the rest of the Objects is that he has a will and a conscious mind.
McCleister explains the Law of Conservation of Objects and convinces Miller to kill him, replacing him as the Occupant and becoming an Object himself; Miller does, then uses the Key to enter Room 10 through the door to Room 8, and Bloom uses the Key to reset the Room with Miller inside; during the Reset, Miller is able to recall Anna back into Room 10, and they exit when Bloom opens the door; before leaving the Sunshine Motel, Miller uses the key to open Room 10 through Room 8, and leaves the Key inside, closing the door; Bloom, Miller and Anna leave Gallup and head back to Pittsburgh. As they leave, the door to Room 8 swings open, revealing Room 10 and the Key once again.
