The Elminster Series is a series of novels by Ed Greenwood, set in the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting. The series explains Elminster's life before he was well-known across Faerûn and some periods of time where either no-one or only the powerful mages knew where he was.
Elminster is one of the most powerful mages in Faerûn. He was and is a Chosen of Mystra and was the previous Lady of Magic's favorite. While also being her lover for a time before he carried her essence to help make the new Mystra when the weave consumed her. Being a Chosen of Mystra, Elminster can live forever and has many powers unknown or unusable by the average mage. He lives in Shadowdale and created the Harpers, an organization devoted to maintaining the balance of power in Faerûn.
Elminster is often seen around the world helping people for the good of the world.
Novels
- Elminster - The Making of a Mage (1994) - In this first book of the series Elminster has his first encounter with magic as a young boy. It proceeds through his days as a rebel fighter and his nights as a thief, then on to his life following Mystra. It is the first real insight into why Elminster is "Elminster". It starts with an overview of his tragic childhood, on to his even rougher life growing up trying to hide who he is. Then as a thief he sneaks into a closed temple of Mystra to defile it where saved by the Lady of mysteries and given a chase to slay the mage that was to slay him. After he debated with the Goddess over whether or not it is right to use magic he let the mage go. Mystra then helps to hide him from those who might want him to be used in their plots, or just kill him, until he has the power to take his revenge.
