The Education of Sonny Carson is a 1974 film based on the best-selling autobiography of Sonny Carson who joined a gang and committed petty crime before being sent to prison. After his release from prison he changes his life. The Wu-Tang Clan and Lauryn Hill have used dialog from the film in their works.
The film had many originations of directional styles, of the hand in prison moment from the prisoner and civilian. The dark interrogation moment, where two of the police officers come from the dark interogating a young black male. Sonny Carson's gang intuiniation, where the camera was put in a metal cage and it getting hit with dangerous weapons and many, many more.
The film had a $1 million budget. Michael Campus has stressed over this low budget and says he didn't know how he did it.
The movie was one of the most live films ever made. They did this film in the real train station and the real prison.
The films actors were just normal street kids from the neighbourhood. The people they used in the gangs, were real gang members, contradicting the term one of the most live films ever made... the scene when The Lords were on the rooftop and a several gang members start running to attack them does not continue because it was not shot, from fear of the REAL gang members hurting or killing each other. This is the same with the fight in the park later on in the film, they were only pushing each other around.
The REAL Sonny Carson was arrested at the end of the movie.
All of the people in the movie died or is in jail. Leqwon and Sonny Carson were the only ones that did not die or end up in jail. Sonny Carson expresses his sadness over the deaths of so many of his community. He says "Black people are being raised to go to jail".
