[edit] Plot summary
The story takes place in the Middle Eastern country of Nepur, the location of a mysterious landmark: the Dragon's Throat, a large hole in the middle of the desert, surrounded by nothing but dead sand. Many expeditions have tried to descend into it, but have always fled in terror, sometimes leaving members to die. President Al-Dallam, an oil sheik, is convinced that a well-known archaeologist, Dr. Jake Cooper, can solve the mystery of the Dragon's Throat.
