The Disciples, named by Jah Shaka in 1986 and formed by brothers Russ D. & Lol Bell-Brown. They recorded 4 albums of instrumental dub for Jah Shaka` King Of The Zulu Tribe label during the period of `87 - `90 and their tracks were a mainstay of his dances during that time. Production was down to Russ D. who got his first very basic recording equipment together in `85, over the years this has seen many changes moving from bedroom 4 and 8 track recording to a small purpose built studio which now comprises full 24 track recording and mixing facilities.
In 1991 they built their own sound system and played dances across the UK for the following 5 years after. They played alongside notable UK sounds like Abashanti I, Iration Steppa's and Channel One as well as many others within the UK roots and dub scene. Musical content was strictly roots reggae and dub music from all eras.
In 1993 they formed their first label `Boom Shacka Lacka`, the first 12" release on the label was the storming `Prowling Lion`, this was followed by further 12" and 10" single releases over the next few years and the album `For Those Who Understand`. During this time their tracks were also featured on compilations for labels like Virgin (Macrodub series), Dope On Plastic, Zip Dog, Dubhead and many others. Further albums with artists like Rootsman, Dayjah and Sister Rasheda also saw release during this period as well as dub albums and remixes.
In 1997 they formed their second label `Backyard Movements`, whereas the BSL label was designed for releasing heavyweight instrumental dubs the BM label was for roots reggae vocal releases, the label has seen works with both homegrown and Jamaican artists including Prince Allah, Michael Rose, Bunny Lie Lie, Lutan Fyah, Prince Malachi, Tony Roots, Danny Vibes, Christine Miller, Ras Mac Bean, High Priest, Anthony Que and others.
Since `96 the Disciples sound system was dissolved and brother Lol pulled out of the business, Russ D continued with both the label and DJ`ing, teaming up with long time friend Jonah Dan they have toured far and wide bringing their music to the masses from all over the European continent and to far flung places like the USA, Japan, Israel and Mexico.
The works continue in the Disciples `Backyard Studio` with both their own productions and productions for many other labels, a check on their websites discography page reveals the extent and commitment to their works over the years.
