Tim Kearney is a loser. He's already in prison for the fourth time because of a criminal offence. There he's offered a deal with the DEA, which would involve his impersonating a legendary drug dealer, Bobby Z. Tim is told that the real Bobby Z has recently died of a heart attack in an embassy in Thailand, shortly after getting out of prison there. The plan that had been in operation at the time of Bobby's death was for him to be exchanged for a DEA agent that was being held by a Mexican drug cartel. The Feds explain to Tim that if he agrees to go along with this "transfer," he will be free to escape south of the border once the DEA agent is safely back on the American side.

But at the exchange DEA Agent Tad Gruzsa tries to shoot Kearney. Kearney however at this moment falls over a small stone, so the plan fails and a shooting is inflamed. Kearney like Gruzsa survives and Kearney is brought to the estate of Brian Cerviers, a winegrower, who co-operates with the drug mafia. There he shall meet the boss of the drug mafia Don Huertero. From Elizabeth, who likewise lives together with Z's son Kit on the estate, Kearney learns that Don Huertero wants to let him kill.

At the same time, Gruzsa rushes also still another gang of bikers on Kearney, which has him still on their bill. Kearney flees, meets thereby however again and again on adversaries of one of the two sides. He always gets rid of these relatively easy (mostly for these deadly).

Don Huertero corners Kearney, Elizabeth and the boy. When Huertero threatens the boy, Elizabeth reveals that he is Huertero's grandson. After Don Huertero, in a small shooting in Elizabeth's camper, was killed, Elizabeth, Tim and Kit want to flee together with the money of Bobby Z and to develop themselves a new existence somewhere else.

Shortly before the departure of their boat one of the Bikers arrives at the harbour and begins to fire on Tim. This causes them to run away and later on a bridge with Tad, Bobby and some Bikers, the final showdown begins. Gruzsa arrives with the real Bobby Z, but Kearney claims that he is Bobby Z and the real Bobby is Kearney. Since the Bikers don't know whether Tim or Bobby is the real Tim Kearney, Tim successes in a battle of words, to make the Bikers believe that Bobby Z is actually Tim Kearney.

As a side note: Kit calls the real Tim his Dad [,indication of Kit's opposition to his real father] and since the Bikers know that the real Tim Kearney doesn't have any kids, they shoot the fake Tim (who really is Bobby Z). After this the real Tim and his new family leave the scene on the boat into the sunset.
