The Darfsteller is a Hugo Award-winning novelette by Walter M. Miller, Jr..

The Darfsteller is the story of an old actor who has become a theater janitor in order to remain near "show biz". The theater has been overrun by robot actors, made to look like humans, who act out plays according to factors which real actors must contend with-- audience reactions, failing actors (when the machinery is broken or old), and other inconstant factors.

The old actor dreams up a scheme to get himself back on stage, despite the prejudice against real acting. He destroys one of the robot's acting-tapes, and is the only person who can fill in.
