The Cut is the first music magazine at Carnegie Mellon University. It was founded in late 2006 by its current Editor-in-Chief, Elyssa Maxx Goodman. Carnegie Mellon first recognized The Cut as an official student organization on May 3, 2007,[1] and the magazine released their first issue on October 5, 2007.

The Cut's stated purpose is "the exposure of Carnegie Mellon students to all types of music, the recognition of music in the Carnegie Mellon community, and the unification of students through music."[2]Its goals are further divided into four categories[3] :

  • To raise awareness of local music events in Carnegie Mellon and Pittsburgh community;
  • To represent a diverse range of music and music information from established and upcoming groups;
  • To recognize local bands in an official format, and;
  • To expose Carnegie Mellon students to new music.

The Cut is currently a 32 page, black and white, monthly (during the academic year) publication with a circulation of 1,000. In addition to features, the magazine includes artist, genre, venue, and store profiles, new releases, top downloads, album and concert reviews, essays, and an events calendar. All photography, writing, editing, layout, and design are done by The Cut staff. The magazine receives funding from The Phoenix Foundation, Carnegie Mellon University, and individuals. [4]Cover articles have included Joshua James, Bhangra in the Burgh, and Wiz Khalifa, the latter of which has also appeared in Rolling Stone and XXL.
