The Crucible (1957 film)

The Crucible (French: Les Sorcières de Salem) is a 1957 joint Franco-East German film production directed by Raymond Rouleau with a screenplay adapted by Jean-Paul Sartre from the 1953 play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. Miller's play was meant to be an allegory of McCarthyism, and Arthur Miller had recently been blacklisted because of allegations that he was pro-Communist.

The cast of the film includes Simone Signoret, Yves Montand, Mylène Demongeot, Jean Debucourt as well as the director, Raymond Rouleau.

The play The Crucible was not filmed in English until 1996, probably because it was once considered too much of a political "hot potato", especially in 1957, when the French film version was made. Senator McCarthy died a year after the French film was released.
