The Consumation is an independently released album from the band HURT. It was released 3 years before Vol. 1. Only 2,000 copies were sold, with another 3,000 promotional versions distributed. Other full length copies were distributed for free as well. J. Loren Wince was the only current member of the band present during the recording of the record.[1]
There are two versions of this album in existence. Both versions have the same songs on them, however the original case for the album is a CD sleeve and not a standard jewel case. There is also a mistake on the back of the original sleeve where the song "Cold Inside" was not listed on the album sleeve. This was not an intended mistake.[2]
"The Way It Was" was actually called "Somnambulist" on this album until it could be completed and the poem entitled "The Consumation Premise", could be appropriately re-inserted. After which, the song was renamed once more to its completed "The Way It Was" title as is seen on the Re-Consumation album. This song was named by Wil Quaintance, and it is the only song which J. Loren has not named himself.[3] The original cover art was used to inspire the artwork of the Re-Consumation album.
The second printing of the album came with additional funding and was released in a jewel case, but not the original cover art. The second reprinting of the album has stirred some controversy as it was printed with permission of J. Loren to help promote the band, but has since been continually reprinted and sold at very high prices through Ebay. Allowing the fans to purchase the original material was the primary reason the band chose to release the Re-Consumation.[4]
The sound quality of this CD is very raw/unmixed. A thirty second portion of the instrumental song "Somnambulist" appears on Vol. 1 as a segue between the songs "Dirty" and "Cold Inside". Five of the other songs have been redone and re-mastered. The first, "Cold Inside" was released on their first major LP, Vol. 1. The second, "House of Cards" for their Blackmarket EP. The 3rd, 4th and 6th songs, "Alone With The Sea", "Loded", and "Et Al..." appear on Vol. II.
