The Climate Registry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Climate Registry is a nonprofit organization in North America being created to record and track the greenhouse gas emissions of businesses, municipalities and other organisations in 31 states of the USA (covering over 70% of the US population), and 3 provinces of Canada.[1] The data is to be independently verified to ensure accuracy, however participation by organizations will be voluntary.[2]
The registry, launched on May 8, 2007,[3] is modelled on the California Climate Action Registry, which has been in operation since 2001. It is to be based in Washington, D.C.[2] and will start accepting data in January 2008. The Board of Directors will meet for the first time on May 23, 2007.[3]
It will be used to provide data for carbon-reduction initiatives including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in the Northeastern United States, the Western Regional Climate Action Initiative, and by individual states.[1]
The new Registry will support voluntary, market-based and regulatory GHG emissions reporting programs and provides consistency and transparency across borders and throughout all sectors of the economy.
