The Chasm is a death metal band originally from Mexico, now relocated to Chicago.
Their lyrics, apart from death metal conventions, have recurring motifs inspired by mysticism/mythology. Their sound is comprised of technical guitarwork, frequent solos that are classically influenced, dark and melancholic melodies, and drumming that is outside the death metal norm. The Chasm is regarded as one of the most unusual death metal bands to have emerged in the last decade or so. They are noted for the ability to compose long, flowing songs that have a strong riff-base but show a great sense of melody and creative guitarwork. Also striking is the powerful atmosphere that evolves progressively in their songs. Sonically, they are comparable to the Scandinavian Medolic Death bands but the complexity and the variety in the riff constructions and arrangements is quite unmatched. Though their first album was released in 1994 the band got wider recognition only after Earache Records signed them on. Aside from death metal, the band is influenced by other metal genres, such as thrash metal, black metal, progressive metal, and doom metal, and is prevalent in some of their songs. The band has often had problems keeping a permanent bass guitarist.
The band formed from the core members of the now-defunct Mexican band Cenotaph.
