The Chandler Building
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chandler Building (sometimes called the Chandler Apartments) is a historic building at the corner of Dwight Way and Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, California. It is 4 stories tall. It was built in the 1920's.
The building has received some literary fame, being featured prominently in the 2002 mystery novel The Chandler Apartments by Owen Hill, who wrote the book while living there.
It is also the former residence of Jonathan Lethem, a novelist and MacArthur Fellowship recipient.
On the morning of October 29th, 2006, around 4am, there was a large fire at the Chandler. It later turned out that a mentally ill homeless man had set fire to some blue recycling bins in the alley. They were one of several fires set by the individual that night, probably in an effort to keep warm. The building suffered minimal damage.
