The discography of the American vocal pop group The Carpenters includes an overview of all Carpenters albums and how they charted on the Billboard 200 charts in America, the UK Albums Chart in the United Kingdom, the Oricon charts in Japan, and the Kent Music Report (1969—1988) and the ARIA Charts (1988—present) in Australia. Their debut album was released on October 9, 1969, and was originally entitled Offering. However, due to its poor performance in sales, Richard Carpenter decided to re-release the album with a new cover and a new title: Ticket to Ride. It failed to sell 500,000 albums, and its eponymous single failed to reach the top 40, only reaching #54 on the Billboard Hot 100.

However, in 1970, their big break came with their rendition of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "(They Long to Be) Close to You", from their album Close to You. To date, the album Close to You has sold over 2 million units, both in records and in CDs. Their album success would continue until 1975, when a steep decline becomes noticeable. 1975's Horizon has only gone Platinum once to date, and the following year, A Kind of Hush was only certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), meaning that it sold over 500,000 units, but not more than one million (see RIAA certification). Passage was released in September 1977, and it failed to be certified at all, meaning that, to date, it has not sold more than 500,000 units.

This declining trend continued until 1985, with the release of the Carpenters' first two-disc compilation Yesterday Once More. The compilation was certified twice platinum, meaning that it sold over 2 million copies (but less than 3 million). Today, their albums are not selling as well as they had in the past, but they are still being certified Gold by RIAA. Their latest two-disc compilation, Carpenters Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition, was certified Gold on December 17, 2004.

[edit] Live albums

The Carpenters didn't have many official live albums (they had none in the US), but they had one in 1974 in Japan (as well as a video of the concert to go hand in hand) called Live in Japan, and they had one in 1976 in the UK called Live at the Palladium. Their videos of these concerts are not officially released in their entireties on DVD, but in Japan, an unreleased "Live at Budokan" was a performance on May 31, 1974 at Budokan. In England, they had a televised studio concert, called Carpenters: Live at the BBC in 1971, and a rare live concert entitled "The Carpenters: Live at the New London Theatre".

[edit] Solo albums

After Karen's passing on February 4, 1983, Richard started a solo career that had lukewarm responses. Karen, too, had a solo career, though her CD wasn't released until 1996—thirteen years after her passing. Karen's only solo album to date was her eponymous album, released in 1996. The CD, out of print, includes songs recorded by Karen in New York City in 1979 with producer Phil Ramone. None of these solo albums have charted, nor have they been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America.

[edit] Note

  • "Top of the World" charted four times in Japan, at #21 in 1972 and again in 1973 (to coincide with the song's US success), when it peaked at #52. In 1995 it was the B-side of the reissue of "I Need to Be In Love", and subsequently it charted a fourth time (as an A-side) at #83.
  • "Sweet, Sweet Smile" peaked at #8 on Billboard's Country singles chart.
  • "Superstar" and "For All We Know" were released as a double A-side in the UK
  • "I Won't Last A Day Without You" was originally released as an A-side in the UK in 1972 with "Goodbye To Love" as the B-side. However, the sides were switched shortly after the record's release. The former was later released as an A-side in the UK in 1974 to coincide with its first US release as an A-side.
  • The UK re-issue of "Merry Christmas Darling" in 1990 features the second recorded version of the song from their 1978 "Christmas Portrait" album as opposed to the original 1970 version.

[edit] Soundtracks

Even though Richard and Karen never did any full soundtracks to a film, they performed one theme song to a movie, covered one climactic scene of the movie, and covered a theme song to a movie.

Year Song Notes Album
1970 "For All We Know"
  • Richard and Karen only covered the song. They were not the first ones to perform it.
  • "For All We Know" was not the theme to Lovers and Other Strangers. In fact, it was the song played during the wedding scene between the two main characters.
Carpenters
1971 "Bless the Beasts and Children"
  • Richard and Karen were the original performers of the song in the summer of 1971.
  • The Carpenters did not record the whole soundtrack to Bless the Beasts and Children.
Bless the Beasts and Children (soundtrack version)
A Song for You (album version)
1978 "Leave Yesterday Behind"
  • Theme song to the TV movie Leave Yesterday Behind, starring John Ritter.
  • Composed by the same composers of "For All We Know". There are some notable similarities in its structure, especially the beginning woodwind introduction.
