The Book of Life is a movie that was released in 1998, and was made by Hal Hartley. It was one of the first films shot on digital video.

Jesus returns to earth on the eve of the new millennium planning to bring about the apocalypse, but finds himself surprisingly enamored of humanity. It stars Martin Donovan as Jesus, and PJ Harvey as Mary Magdalene. William S. Burroughs has a bit part (voice only) as a radio preacher and Yo La Tengo appear as a Salvation Army band.
