The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman will be a companion novel to the His Dark Materials trilogy. It will follow Lyra, returning to her story two years after Lyra's Oxford, and will tie into that previous book.[1][2] Lyra will be "about 16".[3] The book will also be "about Dust"[4] and will address the questions about the lack of portrayals of positive effects of religion in His Dark Materials,[1] although it "will not be a continuation of the trilogy, but other stories about the same world and the same characters."[5]
Pullman had conceived of this book before the publication of Lyra's Oxford in 2003 but had not begun writing it at that time.[2][6] In a message on his website in April 2005, he said that The Book of Dust was now "under way".[7] As of August 2007, he was still working on the book.[8]
The only indication of its length is Pullman's description of it as "a big, big book".[1]
