[edit] Plot

Elaine must find a special mechanical pencil, the Rolamech 1000, for Mr. Pitt and soon finds herself dealing with the romantic advances of the stationery store clerk. The clerk asks for her telephone number to call her when he receives the pencil but Elaine gives him Jerry's number instead. George purchases a "big salad" for Elaine, but his girlfriend (Julie) appears to take credit for the purchase. George obsesses over the fact that Elaine believes Julie bought the salad, to the point that he goes out of his way to inform Elaine that he was responsible for the purchase of the big salad. Jerry learns that his current girlfriend formerly dated Newman, who ended the relationship. Jerry cannot comprehend why Newman dumped her and subsequently, attempts to find any fault in his girlfriend. Kramer plays golf with an ex-Major League Baseball player, who washes his ball on the second shot (not on the green), breaking the rules and causing an altercation with Kramer. The man is later suspected in the murder of a dry cleaner, and Kramer helps the man flee in a white Ford Bronco in a high speed chase down the New Jersey Turnpike in a scene which is similar to that of the O.J. Simpson car chase (the footage of the O.J. Simpson car chase was used for that scene). The difference in geography is that the Simpson car chase was in Los Angeles while Kramer's chase is down the New Jersey Turnpike, given away by some major errors in geography.

This episode is the first to use a new exterior set for the New York street scenes. The exteriors were formerly shot on a collection of three small store fronts, but the show moved its outside shots to a new, much more expensive street set in Season 6 that allowed for many new camera angles and framing opportunities. In syndication, this episode is one of the few Season 6 episodes to feature Jerry's stand-up comedy routine.

[edit] Quotes

  • Kramer: Poor little Pinkus.
  • George: You know, if it was a regular salad, I wouldn't have said anything. But you had to have the BIIIIIG salad!
