In 2006, Jimmy Carr returned for the third show, broadcast on Wednesday 27 December.
The three teams were:
- Russell Brand & Noel Fielding (Raven Spawn/Rod's Progeny)
- Rob Brydon & David Walliams (Rob and Dave)
- Jonathan Ross & Cat Deeley (The conventionally attractive team)
Guest questioners in the studio included Boy George, Myleene Klass and Matt Willis and Guy Goma (famous for incorrectly appearing as a guest on BBC News 24). Pre-recorded questions were asked by Sir Ian McKellen, Lily Allen, Carol Vorderman, Courtney Love, Girls Aloud, and Sacha Baron Cohen in his guise as Borat.
Russell Brand and Noel Fielding won with 39 points, after receiving 22 points for answering one question correctly. It was a media question, which sowed pictures of Rose Tyler, Nikki Graham, Mike Baldwin (Coronation Street) and Helen Mirren's character from Prime Suspect. The question was: "All of these people did it once, but Nikki did it twice". The answer was they all left their respective show. Noel and Russell got 22 points from answering this because Jimmy thought that they wouldn't know the answer. Ross and Deeley got 38 while Walliams and Brydon came last with 37.
Walliams and Brydon appeared to take the quiz rather seriously and behaved as though highly annoyed when Jimmy Carr awarded 22 points to Brand and Fielding, feeling that they had not been trying and did not deserve to win.
Brand and Fielding's team were referred to as the "Goth Detectives", and joked about how they were going to start a show together. Several references to Camden Market and Camden Lock were made in connection with Brand and Fielding. Due to the joking made on the show, the pair eventually performed a 'Goth Detectives' themed show for the Teenage Cancer Trust event at the Royal Albert Hall on 28 March 2007. They also appeared in 2007's Big Fat Quiz, to reprise the team.
The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2006 was repeated on 28 December 2006, and 30 / 31 December 2006 on E4 and Channel 4 respectively.

[edit] 2007 Programme
The show aired on 30 December 2007.
The teams were:
- Russell Brand and Noel Fielding (The Goth Detectives)
- Rob Brydon and David Mitchell (The Shadow Cabinet)
- Jonathan Ross and Lily Allen (Fulham FC)
Noel Fielding and Russell Brand campaigned (without success) for an extra 50 points during the last round in order to come out on top in order to echo their win of the 2006 program when they were awarded 22 points for just one correct answer.
The final scores were as follows:
- The Goth Detectives: 17
- Fulham FC: 36
- The Shadow Cabinet: 38
This was the first time contender Rob Brydon has won the quiz, despite appearing on the show every year since 2004. Also, it was the first time that one team had appeared the next year after they first appeared (Noel and Russell).
