The Betrayer is the first book in the Prophecy of the Dragon series by Paul Roberts. The story follows the life of a young lad named Patain, whose family is brutally murdered. Thinking it the work of the dragon who lives in the neighbouring hills, Patain sets off to wreak his revenge. When Patain encounters the dragon Shyniarerynaugh - later called Shyne, he finds a truth more devastating than he could ever have imagined. An extremely powerful elf mage by the name of Qua'dan'iek has created an army of reptilianites, which is sweeping through the kingdom, destroying everything in its path. Accepting the dragon's offer to learn the art of magic, Patain sets about restoring the balance of power.

Patain - A young farm boy whose family are murdered whilst he is collecting supplies from Organaon City and possibly the only hope the kingdom has.
Shyne - Dragon who sees the potential in Patain to be a great mage.
Rae Fallow - Seargent in Organon City and friend to Patain.
Qua'dan'iek - Leader of the reptilianite army that is sweeping across the kingdom. Once an elf, now covered from head to toe in dragon scales due to his dark magic.
Delash Hinradu - Bodyguard of Qua'dan'iek. A brutal warrior who cut out his own tongue to keep his master's secrets. Four ceremonial scars adorn his face and he carries two swords across his back.

Tyler Fallow - Brother to Rae, also a guardsman in Organon City.
Dyn - A candlemaker who sells his wares in Organon market.
Captain Kal'dane - Captain of the Eastern quadrant in Organon City.
Flek - A blacksmith's apprentice who gets embroiled in the war. He runs recognisance missions for Rae.
Oeni - Young woman who works as a dressmaker at Madame Fenney's Dress Emporium.
Hawthorne - Blacksmith and leader of the resistance.
Roack - Ex-soldier in Organon city, who now works as a blade for hire. Quick to anger and a blood thirsty fighter.
Chan'gok - Dungeon keeper at Aurelia City.
Lord Mak'ien - Lord of Organon City and good friend to the king.
King Faron - Ruler of the kingdom.
Kotunga - Shavarnian Priest of Kustica.
Granatis - Shavarnian Son of Shaka.
Sir Vit'ra - Knight of the Rose and High lord commander of the king's armies.
Sir Gran'dok - Knight of Aurelia.
Thi'ton - Veteran soldier who advises Rae.
Felouse - Head cook in the castle's kitchen.
Seberum - Farmer on the northern outskirts of Organon City.
